Essential party trends for event planners to try in 2022
Despite the difficulties many have experienced over the last two years, it is heartening to see that some amazing and unique trends have emerged despite the negative effects on the event industry. 2022 promises to be another amazing, forward year for party lovers (and professionals).
Eco-Friendly Party Decor
There’s been alot of talk about going green and being ‘eco’ in the last few years. However, in 2022 we can expect brands to start getting serious about this, especially in the wake of the single use plastic ban. Expect more creative textures and materials and clearly marked packaging indicating green status as consumers demand sustainable options.
New Milestone
With two years of missed celebrations and postponements in 2022 we’ll be playing catch up. “Do-Over Celebrations” will be a big one this year to make up for all the missed celebrations”, says Roxanne from Lovely Occasions. We’ll probably see lots of fun milestone themes such as 30(+1)”. We are definately here for it!
Arches Everywhere
The arch aesthetic has developed from the simple backdrop cultinating in a whole style of it’s own. The arch shape is popping up on cakes, decor and more.

Ripple Look Decor
This trend is just too ubiquitous to ignore! Whether you call them Roman plinths, ripple plinths or any other names, this look is now spreading to backdrops and even cakes! A look clearly inspired by interior design. You’ll never want an untextured plinth again!
Pattern Round Up
Gingham and terrazzo are two bon- afide trends for 2022, but what else will be popular in patterns? Looking to fashion and interiors, we see mod and retro, daisy, rainbow water colours, and even some whispers of stripes making a comeback.
Popular Party Themes
Butterfly, Coco Melon and Encanto are just some of the kids’ themes emerging in 2022. Bluey and Barbie of course are still hot-to-trot. For grownups, nostalgia and travel under- pin most of our faves – symptomatic of two years of lockdowns and border closures. Some themes include disco, 90s, 80s, Italy, France and tropical.
Unique Candle Arrangements
Event planner’s love affair with candles was reignited last year with the emergence of stunning celebration candle displays. This year, thse will become even more creative with new materials and shapes. Google ‘circular candle stands’ to see more.
Personalised Portraits
Personalisation has been trending for several years now, but it’s no longer reserved for just decor and favour. Stunning and immersive portraits of those celebrating are now popping up in styled set ups, making the celebrations extra special. Whether photographed or illustrated, their life size dimensions scream impact.

What’s Trending for Party Cakes?
Amber Comadira-Smith is owner of Cake With Amber. Amber teaches cake decorators the design knowledge they need to take their cake skills to the next level, so they can create edible art for any occasion. We asked the uber-creative cake artist and teacher to give us her thoughts on upcoming cake trends.
Retro Buttercream
Retro and vintage influenced butter- cream cakes are currently building huge popularity. The bold colours and elab- orate icing layers really catch your eye and spark that instant nostalgia! Often referred to as kitschy and over-embe- lished, the new trend has divided the cake community. Are they amazing works of cake art? Or is the trend simply gaudy?
Organic Textured Cakes
Effortless and elegant textured cakes are a trend that’s here to stay. The trend on texture has continued to evolve these last few years, with a recent pull towards organic shapes and embracing textural imperfections. The result? Stunning avant-garde edible-art.
Mini Cakes
These pint-sized edible masterpieces are packing a big punch! The pandemic has reinvigorated this micro trend as celebrations and events become more intimate. It’s an upgrade from your regular cupcake, but still as elegant and striking as a tiered masterpiece! Use these minis as wedding favors or as an alternate to your customary celebration cake.
